Everyone knows that laughter puts you in high spirits, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What we can accomplish, armed with laughter, is way beyond imagination. The idea of laughter being the best medicine, has been part of conventional wisdom for at least 3,000 years. An old Yiddish proverb says, “As soap is to the body, so laughter is to the Soul.”
Through the power of autosuggestion via positive affirmations, we can consciously uplift our mood by speaking good and thinking good words. This process creates a sort of virtuous circle since we tend to be more positive when we feel good. Then you find yourself living in a beautiful valley where everything seems to flow smoothly and almost effortlessly. Now what can you do when this circle is broken, and you wake up chained to depression, anxiety, or doubt?
First, don’t be afraid of losing control and being overtaken by these feelings. You can’t always be operating at maximum capacity. There will be days where you might feel not so good despite all your efforts to be happy.
The universe cycle is made of ups and downs. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling tired when we deal with unpleasant emotions. This is just the way life happens, it can knock you down sometimes. The important thing is to remember not to be knocked out. When you fall down, just get back on your feet and get out of that maze in your mind.
When faced with such situations, a good laugh is just what you need. It breaks the cycle of negativity by forcing a shift in perspective. Humor proves to be a fun and healthy way to create enough distance between you and your troubles. And like with all things in life, we need that distance to be able to see the full picture. How can anyone identify anything pressed too close up against his nose? Laughter enables us to get clarity and objectivity when analyzing a situation because it helps us rise up and look at it with perspective. Eventually, once you understand that you have been prey to your negative emotions, you can now dissolve them by seeing them for what they are, just emotions. This is how powerful a good laugh can be. It can heal a lot of hurts.
Most of the time, when people feel down for no apparent reason, they usually continue doing what they are doing and give total freedom to their conscious mind to turn their life into a tragedy full of drama. If you are faced with one of these moments, choose to practice laughter through one of the exercises mentioned in [My laughter routine]. This will give you enough perspective to see life for what it is: a real comedy where all tragedies are mind-created fictions.
Human beings keep wasting their time and energy on too many insignificant things, that their ego will try and convince them are important. Don’t take life too seriously, because it’s not. At the end, nobody survives it. Remember, the only imperative is to have some fun. So never hesitate to mix a bit of foolishness and lightness with your plans and objectives. Sometimes all we need to do is shake things up and enjoy the party.
Let’s practice now with a fast-recharge Yes exercise to uplift our present mood:
– Shake your shoulders up and down for about 10 seconds.
— Say ‘Ha ha ha’ in a machine gun style. Use each laugh to line up and obliterate each problem.
– Put your hands on your thighs.
– Take a deep breath as you lift your hands up and make a big energic YES as you exhale.
– Repeat this three times.
Feels good, right? When you get caught in that place called moroseness, laughter exercises work as a first aid procedure. They help you get unstuck. Once this is done, you must have a break and go out play football, watch a movie, have an ice cream, go shopping, or do whatever you enjoy doing. The important thing is to change your current gloomy-perceived environment to give distance to the drama you are experiencing. Taking a break doesn’t slow you down, it is sometimes a necessity to help you power up and come back stronger to achieve your goals and dreams.
